“The Super Mario Bros. Movie” has finally hit theaters, allowing fans to see all their favorite characters from this Nintendo franchise on the big screen.
While this movie is filled with references to other figures and entries in the series, such as “Mario Kart,” one character stands out — the adorable yet disturbed Lumalee.
Voiced by co-director Michael Jelenic’s daughter, Juliet, Lumalee is one of Bowser’s prisoners and is often spouting depressive messages in a light-hearted, childish voice.
The Penguin King implies that something’s wrong with him. When Luigi wants to find a way to escape, Lumalee says, “There’s no escape. The only hope is the sweet relief of death.”
Fans who played the “Super Mario Galaxy” series might already be familiar with the Lumas and Lumalees, friendly little starry creatures that can often be seen dancing and smiling.
The film’s Lumalee is also smiling; however, the Penguin King might be right, as it appears he has been Boswer’s prisoner for too long and has cracked in an adorably weird way.
