Torbin's Barash Vow In Star Wars: The Acolyte, Explained
By BRYAN YOUNG
In "Star Wars: The Acolyte," Master Torbin takes the Barash Vow, a form of penance in which a Jedi disconnects from all duties within the Jedi Order to connect with the Force.
First introduced in Charles Soule's run of the Marvel Comics "Darth Vader" series, this vow is typically undertaken by Jedi who feel they have done something wrong.
Torbin has spent over a decade in silent meditation, isolated from the world due to his guilt over a past tragedy involving Mae, a dark side assassin, and her planet Brendok.
When Torbin finally wakes up, he apologizes to Mae for his actions. The climax of his story arc comes when he willingly drinks the poison from her planet to seek absolution.
Torbin's Barash Vow and subsequent actions show his deep remorse. It also indicates that his crimes — yet to be fully revealed — were serious enough for him to take his own life.
