The Avengers Faced 2 Problems With Chris Evans' Captain America Costume
By WITNEY SEIBOLD
When designing the Captain America costume for Chris Evans in "The Avengers," the costume designers faced two challenges. The first issue was whether to cover Evans' ears.
Although Captain America's ears are exposed in the comics, visual designer Ryan Meinerding and director Joss Whedon felt that covering the ears would look better in live-action.
This decision required revisions to ensure the cowl looked realistic and integrated seamlessly with the rest of the costume while avoiding the awkward appearance of exposed ears.
The second problem was dealing with the wrinkling of the neck area. The costume needed to allow for natural movement without creating unsightly wrinkles when Evans moved his head.
The team had to balance the practicalities of the costume's movement with maintaining a streamlined look, ultimately deciding that the cowl should resemble a separate helmet.
