The Audition Moment That Made Burt Ward Batman’s First-Ever Robin
By WITNEY SEIBOLD
Burt Ward, also known as Bert "Sparky" Gervais, Jr., secured a "Batman" audition through his real estate experience while selling a home to a Fox executive.
During the audition, Batman and Robin delve into the nefarious plans of the Penguin. With the Penguin role still undecided, a significant weight rested on Ward's performance.
In his autobiography "Back to the Batcave," Adam West recalled his initial screen test with Ward and the flawless delivery of a specific line, signaling he met the criteria needed.
Mid-scene, Ward confidently shouted one of Robin's catchphrases, “Holy popcorn, Batman!” West loved it, and the chemistry on the screen was undeniable.
West clarified that, beyond his dialogue, Ward’s portrayal of Robin “had to have the build and energy of a 15-year-old but with adult sensibilities and wit to sell the character.”
West applauded Ward’s performance, stating, “As Burt said that last line, he slammed his fist into his palm with punishing enthusiasm. As he did, I knew Batman had a Robin.”
