Star Trek: TNG’s Most Emotional Episode Was Extra Personal For Patrick Stewart
By WITNEY SEIBOLD
Patrick Stewart claimed that the episode “The Inner Light” in “Star Trek: The Next Generation” was one of his most gratifying experiences working on “Star Trek.”
While soaring the galaxy, the U.S.S. Enterprise stumbles upon an alien probe of unknown origin. The probe beams a light onto the Enterprise's bridge, striking Captain Picard.
He wakes up in alien clothes and is addressed by a woman named Eline, who claims to be his wife. Picard is told that his name is Kamin and that he has suffered a memory lapse.
Stewart explained in his autobiography “Making It So: A Memoir” that the reason the episode was so emotional for him was because his real son, Daniel, acted in the episode.
He admitted, “The great treat of ‘The Inner Light’ for me was that Kamin had two children [...] when the boy grew up into a young man, he was played by... my own son, Daniel.”
Stewart continued, “Dan looks good today, but there is a boyishness about him in that episode that brings a lump to my throat when I watch it now.”
It was especially precious for Stewart because he has expressed a great deal of regret when it comes to his relationships with his two children, Daniel and Sophia.
In an interview with the Irish Independent, Stewart was openly regretful, saying that in the past he “put acting first,” and that now his relationship with them is “non-existent.”
