Scott Glenn 'Stole' His Hunt For Red October Performance From The Genuine Article
By MIYAKO PLEINES
The 1990 thriller “The Hunt For Red October” is remembered for its compelling characters like Sean Connery’s Marko Ramius and Alec Baldwin’s Jack Ryan, but one character who doesn't get nearly enough credit for his badass ability to lead a crew is Commander Bart Mancuso. Mancuso’s venerable leadership of the USS Dallas was convincingly portrayed by Scott Glenn.
A large part of Mancuso’s charm comes from Glenn's stellar performance, and as part of his research for the role, the actor joined real-life Admiral Tom Fargo aboard the submarine USS Salt Lake City. In an interview on The Rich Eisen Show in December 2020, Glenn said that while he was on board, he paid special attention to Fargo.
Glenn said, “I watched the way that he dealt with his crew and decided rather than, you know, [using] whatever limited amount of talent I have, I should just steal the whole performance from him because he was perfect. Which I did." Fargo’s help “was like giving [Glenn] an acting lesson” that directly led to his performance in the film.
