Marlon Wayans Claims He Was Paid For Not Playing Robin In Batman Returns
By MARCOS MELENDEZ
Marlon Wayans was set to make his superhero debut as Robin in Tim Burton's “Batman Returns,” but he didn’t get to play the part. He was still compensated, though.
After the success of the 1989 “Batman,” Warner Bros. insisted on including Robin in the sequel “Batman Returns” with Wayans in the role, but his stint as Robin was short-lived.
Despite going through the casting process, Wayans was removed from “Batman Returns” during pre-production to cut down the film’s bloated script, but his time was not wasted.
The actor told Gizmodo, “I was [...] supposed to play Robin, in ‘Batman Returns’ ... But there was too many characters. I was cast, I was paid [...] I still get residual checks.”
Robin was already a household name thanks to the popularity of the Adam West “Batman” television series from the '60s, where the character was memorably played by Burt Ward.
Wayans’ casting as Robin would’ve made him one of the first Black superheroes on the big screen, and the representation alone could’ve made his appearance in
the film worthwhile.
