Marlon Brando’s Infamous Godfather Cue Cards Were More Than A Memory Aid
By ERIC VESPE
Hollywood icon Marlon Brando has had a lasting impact on the film industry, with his naturalistic approach establishing him as one of the greatest actors of all time.
However, there are some infamous stories about him, particularly his refusal to learn his lines later in his career, including for his role as Don Corleone in “The Godfather.”
It’s no secret that Brando relied on cue cards for his dialogue, but there has been some confusion as to why the legendary actor would choose to use this method.
Brando explained that he used the Stanislavski Method, which allows actors to give a more realistic-feeling line delivery rather than repeating practiced dialogue.
The actor explained, “In ordinary life, people seldom know exactly what they’re going to say when they open their mouths and start to express a thought.”
Director Francis Ford Coppola’s fears over Brando’s cue cards proved unfounded, as the film went on to be a huge hit and has gone down as one of the greatest movies of all time.
