Leonard Nimoy Caused Drama As Director Of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
By VALERIE ETTENHOFER
Though "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home" director Leonard Nimoy and producer Harve Bennett often spoke warmly about one another, they had points of contention in their relationship.
One major source of tension came during "Star Trek IV," when Nimoy thought Bennett was still treating him with kid gloves despite him proving himself a capable director.
Bennett said, "Leonard didn't have a lot of experience directing, so I spent a lot more time on the set [of III] than I would normally have." By IV, Nimoy was over it.
"He got a little more resentful during 'Star Trek IV' because he figured he had proved himself. So we had a little friction," Bennet said. Nimoy confirmed this in "I Am Spock."
The pair notably clashed about the dialogue for a scene between whales and humans, the casting of Commander Kruge, and the idea of bringing Spock back.
Still, the pair's relationship remained close; Nimoy spoke of Bennett as a creative partner and called him his "old friend," and for his part, Bennett was equally complimentary.
