Kim Cattrall Wishes Star Trek Had Let Her Show A Little More Leg
By WITNEY SEIBOLD
Kim Cattrall joined Nicholas Meyer's 1991 film “Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country,” where she played Valeris, a brilliant young officer being trained to replace Spock.
Like most Starfleet officers, Valeris wore a red shirt with black slacks uniform while on duty. The days of female officers wearing go-go boots and minidresses were gone.
Cattrall spoke of this in “The Fifty-Year Mission: The Complete, Uncensored, Unauthorized Oral History of Star Trek: The First 25 Years,” by Mark A. Altman and Edward Gross.
Surprisingly, Cattrall preferred the uniforms she grew up watching and wanted hers altered: “I told Nick I really wanted to wear a skirt, like Uhura, since I have great legs.”
Cattrall elaborated, “I wasn't into hiding things at that point in my life. I feel good about the way I look, and as a woman, I enjoy feeling sexy.”
In the end, Meyer didn’t change Valeris’ uniform. He seemingly wanted to lean into a more formalized version of “Star Trek” where the uniforms were less gendered.
