It's Time For Superhero Movies To Take A Nice, Long Break
By JENNA BUSCH
While superhero films have always been popular, movies like “Iron Man” and Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight Trilogy” have made the genre a pop-culture powerhouse. Fans have fallen in love with seeing their favorite heroes on the big screen or seeing lesser-known characters in the spotlight; however, with so many films and TV shows out, this infatuation is in danger of ending.
Behind-the-scenes
Part of the growing superhero fatigue stems from the information available to fans, everything from picture deals to the actors’ personal lives and controversies. The genre’s boom also coincides with the rise of social media, which brought the cruelty of toxic fandom that has seen many harassed for having a different opinion from the community.
Too much CGI
Fans were more willing to forgive the films for the third act that relied heavily on CGI in the early days, but now movies like “Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania” have become almost entirely computerized. These effects and backgrounds ruin the moviegoers’ experience and are only made worse by the knowledge of the effects artists’ mistreatment.
Too much info
Although background knowledge of a character or comic storyline can make the movie experience more enjoyable, the amount of information needed now has become unbearable. Some fans might enjoy all the deep background, but the general public has become tired of needing to do outside research to understand the story.
Too much multiverse
The multiverse is an exciting concept for comics, but the idea applied to a cross-franchise storyline can become overwhelming for casual audiences who might want to enjoy a straightforward film. Some mid-credit scenes or other references could be lost on many viewers who didn’t happen to watch a particular TV show or movie.
