Even Ewan McGregor Couldn't Save Moulin Rouge! From Star Wars
By CAROLINE MADDEN
Due to the various production delays of Baz Luhrmann's "Moulin Rouge!," the cast and crew suddenly found themselves getting kicked out of Australia's Fox Sydney Studios to make way for the next movie to be filmed there. That movie was George Lucas' "Star Wars: Attack of the Clones," which coincidentally also starred "Moulin Rouge’s" male lead, Ewan McGregor.
In an interview with The Guardian, Luhrmann revealed that the elephant sequence in the movie had to be shortened from the week that was planned for shooting. He said, “[W]e ran out of days, and George Lucas, who is a very nice man, but his producer just ripped the [set] down,” and thus, Luhrmann was forced to “quietly and secretly finish the movie in Madrid.”
As for McGregor, he hated the abrupt interruption, as he wasn’t ready to let go of “Moulin Rouge!” yet, saying, “It was depressing to go on that quickly: I was yearning for more.” Even though he was starring in the movie that caused the interruption, he admitted that he “resent[ed]” “Star Wars” for destroying the beautiful sets.
