Dune’s VFX Team Created A Brand-New Technique For Its Hologram Scenes
By JOE ROBERTS
For Denis Villeneuve's "Dune," visual effects supervisor Paul Lambert and his team created an entirely new technique for the film’s holographic Hunter Seeker scene.
The scene has Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) step into a holographic tree to evade detection by a lethal drone. It was created by laying digital effects over existing footage.
This meant creating the lineaments of the holographic tree ahead of time and projecting them on-set so that Chalamet and the camera operators had something visual to work with.
Lambert further explained that when Chalamet "[...] moved, a different slice would be projected, which made it feel as if he was going through a branch."
Lambert explained that once the crew filmed Chalamet, the team at Wylie had to "meticulously line up where the tree was in front and behind" in a separate video.
