Brandon Routh Explains Why We Never Got A Sequel To Superman Returns
By JOE ROBERTS
“Superman Returns,” starring Brandon Routh as the titular hero, never got a sequel despite making $391 million at the box office — and Routh shared his thoughts as to why.
He said on the “Inside of You” podcast, “The [first] movie was widely well-reviewed [...] but it, you know, made almost $400 million worldwide but that wasn't enough.”
Apparently, Warner Bros. was discouraged by the box office numbers, which made a sequel too much of a risk for the studio. Plus, the producing and creative entities had moved on.
“Certain people at [Warner Bros.] who were excited about Superman had left to go on to other projects and other studios,” Routh explained to the Geek House Show.
Neither the film’s writers, Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris, nor director, Bryan Singer, decided to work on a sequel, even though the latter had been in talks to direct one.
Routh concluded, “The passion and interest in Superman dissipated, and also the movie didn't [...] bring back enough monetary success for them to actually pull the trigger on it.”
