Is The Collector's Fortress In 'Thor: Ragnarok'?
Disneyland Resort is currently retrofitting the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror attraction into Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: Breakout!, which is set to open later this summer. The new Disney California Adventure attraction is being rethemed into a fortress owned by Benicio Del Toro's character Taneleer Tivan (AKA the Collector). Of course, this Fortress has not appeared in any of the Marvel movies to date, and James Gunn has confirmed that the Collector does not appear in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. But what if the Collector's new digs make a theatrical appearance in Thor: Ragnarok?
Is the Collector's Fortress in Thor: Ragnarok?
A structure spotted over the shoulder of Grandmaster (Jeff Goldblum) in the Thor: Ragnarok trailer shares some similarities to that of the building being constructed in DCA. Big thanks to /Film theme park consultant Reza Lackey for pointing this out.
Is it possible that the Collector's Fortress will make it's MCU debut on the big screen? It's also likely that this is just an Easter egg in the background for Disneyland fanatics like myself. I can see the similarities, but it's a little too unclear to say for sure.
In the third installment of the Thor film franchise, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) finds himself stranded and helpless on a distant world. This is the planet Sakaar, a junkyard planet which is very industrial in its look. That seems like the perfect location for Taneleer Tivan's industrial-looking fortress. In the trailer, we see wormholes in the sky that appear to spit out all sorts of junk onto the planet, which might make for an interesting place for a scavenger like the Collector to hang out.
Benicio Del Toro is not listed in the cast listing for Thor: Ragnarok, but neither is Christopher Fairbank, the actor who played his Broker in Guardians of the Galaxy. Before production began, I heard that Fairbank might have a part in Thor: Ragnarok. I'm not sure if that has changed or not, and have no idea what role he does/did have in the story.
This "warehouse, fortress-like power plant" (as described by Walt Disney Imagineering Creative Executive Joe Rohde) is designed to be intimidating and imposing, but also shimmering and regal. Above is a photo I took of the in-progress construction a few weeks back. In the storyline of the new attraction, the Collector is using the fortress to secure and show off his most prized acquisition: the Guardians of the Galaxy.
Deep inside his fortress-like collection, the mysterious Taneleer Tivan (aka The Collector) is displaying his newest acquisitions, the Guardians of the Galaxy. They are trapped in customized display cases, suspended over a vast abyss. Unbeknownst to their unscrupulous captor, the intrepid Rocket has escaped and is enlisting the Collector's VIP guests for help. Guests board a gantry lift, which launches them into a chaotic and hilarious adventure as they join Rocket in an attempt to break his fellow Guardians out of captivity.
What do you think? Is That The Collector's Fortress in the background? Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! opens on May 27, 2017 at Disney California Adventure park.
