Jeff Goldblum Teases Return Of The Grandmaster, Brags About Super Powers
Last year, Thor: Ragnarok became one of the best entries in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. There was plenty to love in the sci-fi comic book comedy directed by Taika Waititi, but easily one of the best parts was Jeff Goldblum playing The Grandmaster, the eccentric leader of the trash planet Sakaar. And according to Jeff Goldblum, it sounds like there's a chance the brightly robed character who loves celebrating his birthday with orgies might return.
Once Thor (Chris Hemsworth) escaped from Sakaar with Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) and The Grandmaster's favorite bounty hunter Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), the fate of The Grandmaster was left mostly up in the air. Anyone who stuck around for the traditional post-credits scene was treated to this moment:
As you can see, The Grandmaster is surrounded by citizens of Sakaar, who don't seem to be all that thrilled with their leader. A revolution that engulfed the city would imply that The Grandmaster likely doesn't have a bright future ahead of him. But it also doesn't guarantee that he's entirely doomed, either.
However, when it comes to surviving the powerful snap of Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War, Jeff Goldblum doesn't seem to be worried about whether or not The Grandmaster survived that potential death sentence. In an interview with Digital Spy, Goldblum bragged:
"Grandmaster is more superheroed than all of them put together. You can't kill me, I'm like a vampire. I'm deathless and I can kill people by looking at them. Or I can resurrect them just by looking at them and thinking of them. I can do everything. Being able to do all of that, all I want to do is play games. So really I'm everywhere and nowhere. I'm like Keyser Söze."
The Grandmaster is indeed powerful, even if we don't see him show off those super powers in the movie. Elsewhere, Goldblum even once said, "I can do everything. I can fly. I can do all sort of thing, really." However, this quote feels more like Jeff Goldblum just being Jeff Goldblum, who honestly isn't all that dissimilar from The Grandmaster anyway.
So what are the chances of The Grandmaster popping up in Avengers 4? After all, he's an ancient powerful being, and he's the brother of The Collector, who may or may not be dead after the events of Avengers: Infinity War (it's not entirely clear if he's alive). They could be integral to The Avengers staging some kind of comeback and stopping Thanos.
For Goldblum's part, he's just waiting to find out if anything will happen with him, "I could be, potentially, very much around. Anything they want me to do I'd be ready and able."
We know Taika Waititi once had a different plan for The Grandmaster's survival for a post-credits scene that ended up being cut. But beyond that, we'll have to wait and see if this fan favorite character will be around for Avengers 4. Anything is possible at this point.
