'Ready Player One' Extended TV Spot: Go Anywhere, Be Anyone, Dance If You Want To
This weekend, Steven Spielberg has a contender for Best Picture at the Oscars in the form of The Post. It's not likely the film will come away with the top prize, but Spielberg will have plenty to distract himself with since a new film from the director arrives in theaters later this month.
Ready Player One puts Steven Spielberg back behind the camera for a big budget sci-fi adventure adapted from Ernest Cline's nostalgic pop culture extravaganza of the same name. The movie will be chock full of references from plenty of beloved movies, including some that Spielberg produced himself. A new Ready Player One TV spot shows off another reference that makes perfect sense since the film hails from Warner Bros. Pictures.
It would appear that Wade Watts' avatar inside The OASIS has to disguise himself while infiltrating a location inside the virtual world. In this case, the disguise is a familiar one: Clark Kent. The Superman theme composed by John Williams also makes an appearance, which is a welcome addition since this is one of the few Spielberg movies that won't have the entire score composed by the Oscar-winning musical genius.
In addition, this new Ready Player One TV spot shows off a little more of the world both inside and outside The OASIS by focusing on the various characters and their avatars. There even appears to be the revelation that King Kong is controlled by a little girl who just so happens to have a Donkey Kong Junior poster on her wall.
As interested I am in seeing a movie on this scale from Steven Spielberg again, I still find myself having difficulty warming up to the digital avatars inside The OASIS. Obviously it's supposed to look like a realistic but stylized video game world, and the characters are the same way. But there's something about it that doesn't feel quite right to me. Maybe that will change when I'm sitting in the theater.
Here's the official synopsis for Ready Player One:
The film is set in 2045, with the real world on the brink of chaos and collapse. But people have found salvation in the OASIS, an immersive virtual universe where you can go anywhere, do anything, be anyone. The OASIS was created by the brilliant and eccentric James Halliday (Mark Rylance). When Halliday died, he left his immense fortune, and total control of the OASIS, to the first person to win three keys, unlocking the door to a digital Easter egg he hid somewhere in his seemingly infinite creation. His challenge launched a game that gripped the entire world, but after five years the scoreboard remained tauntingly empty...until now.
An unlikely young hero named Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan)—under his avatar name, Parzival—finally conquers the first contest, instantly becoming a celebrity...and a target. Ruthless corporate mogul Nolan Sorrento (Ben Mendelsohn) proves he will stop at nothing to beat Wade and take over the OASIS, and suddenly the virtual stakes are all-too-real. Ultimately realizing he cannot win alone, Wade joins forces with his friends—now the High Five (Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Lena Waithe, Philip Zhao, Win Morisaki). Together, they are hurled into a reality-bending treasure hunt through a fantastical universe of discovery and danger to save the OASIS.
Ready Player One is set to hit theaters on March 29, 2018.
