I know this is a controversial opinion for some, but I honestly believe Better Call Saul has surpassed its predecessor Breaking Bad in every single way. I'm not saying I thought Breaking Bad was bad, mind you. I'm just saying that Saul has defied the odds to forge its own brilliant path. When Better Call Saul was first announced, I was skeptical. A Breaking Bad spin-off didn't sound like the best idea, and had a certain air of desperation to it. It seemed as if AMC, aware they were losing Breaking Bad soon, were scrambling to keep something, anything, related to Breaking Bad alive. But in just three short seasons, creators Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould have managed to turn Saul into its own brilliant, complex thing.
The series focuses on Jimmy McGill (Bob Odenkirk), a morally grey lawyer who would one day become the ambulance chaser Saul Goodman, first introduced on Breaking Bad. Better Call Saul presents the origin story of Saul Goodman, but it's also a wonderfully written, brilliantly acted character drama about deeply flawed characters. Odenkirk is fantastic, and the cast around him – particularly Rhea Seehorn, as Jimmy's girlfriend and fellow lawyer Kim Wexler – are all phenomenal.
Season 3 brought in familiar Breaking Bad character Gus Fring (Giancarlo Esposito), the drug lord who runs restaurant chain Los Pollos Hermanos. This Better Call Saul season 4 teaser confirms that Gus will continue to play a major part in the season to come. Speaking to THR, Vince Gilligan confirmed that season 4 is going to have even more overlap with Breaking Bad:
"It gets darker, it gets richer. It's still got funny in it, but on the Venn diagram of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, the overlap in the center is getting bigger and bigger ... There is a very important character — I'm not promising you ever saw this character, but there was a very important character nonetheless from the Breaking Bad era who we're going to meet this year."
I'm sure this will be great news for Breaking Bad fans, but I'm personally in no rush to see Saul catch up to Bad. The closer it gets to the Breaking Bad era, the sooner the show will come to an end. And I'm definitely not ready for that. Better Call Saul returns to AMC on August 6, 2018. Check out the full season 4 synopsis below.
In Better Call Saul's fourth season, Chuck's death catalyzes Jimmy McGill's transformation into Saul Goodman. In the wake of his loss, Jimmy takes steps into the criminal world that will put his future as a lawyer — and his relationship with Kim — in jeopardy. Chuck's death deeply affects former colleagues Howard (Patrick Fabian) and Kim as well, putting the two of them once again on opposite sides of a battle sparked by the Brothers McGill. While Mike takes a more active role as Madrigal Electromotive's newest (and most thorough) security consultant. It's a volatile time to be in Gus Fring's employ, as Hector's collapse sends shock waves throughout the Albuquerque underworld and throws the cartel into chaos — tearing apart both Gus and Nacho's well-laid plans. While Gus changes course, Nacho finds himself in the crosshairs of deadly forces.
