'Avengers: Infinity War' Directors Revealed Who Died And Who Survived Offscreen
Fans are still reeling from the end of Avengers: Infinity War, but they will have a few more answers to hearten them while they wait for Avengers 4 in 2019. Joe and Anthony Russo are still on their post-Infinity War press tour, answering pressing questions and debunking fan theories.
Now they have a few more things to say about the Infinity War deaths and survivals that we didn't see onscreen. Because even though the third Avengers movie was able to squeeze in 70-plus characters into the film, there are still a fair few who didn't get much — or any — screentime. And their fates have finally been answered by the Russo brothers. Kind of. Because where's the fun in knowing everything?
Spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War follow.
Thanos' snap heard around the universe supposedly wiped out half of existence, but which half? There are plenty of beloved Marvel characters who never even appeared in Infinity War, or whose fate during the dusting remained a mystery.
In a round of lightning answers with the Huffington Post, the Russo brothers confirmed the offscreen fates of those characters. Barring spoilers.
Howard the Duck: Alive
"He survived," Joe Russo said.
Good news! Everyone's favorite Guardians of the Galaxy post-credits scene character is alive. Though his bartender is probably gone.
Jane Foster: Unconfirmed
Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) survived a brush with the Reality Stone, why couldn't she survive The Snap? That's yet to be seen, according to Anthony Russo, who remained tight-lipped on Jane's fate on account of spoilers. "When we say spoiler, [we mean] potential spoiler," Anthony Russo clarified to the Huffington Post.
As the first human he met (aka crashed into) and fell in love with, Jane was an essential part of Thor's character growth. But the brilliant astrophysicist had dumped Thor by the time of Thor: Ragnarok, and hasn't been heard from since. But she's unfortunately been pretty thinly written since her introduction in Thor, and has barely earned more than a passing reference in any of the other Avengers movies. So her fate is really up in the air.
Actor Loki, aka Matt Damon: Dead
"Did not survive," said Joe. Just like his acting career.
Betty Ross: Dead
"Gone," said Joe.
Poor Betty Ross (Liv Tyler). Though she's a canonical part of the MCU thanks to the folding in of The Incredible Hulk, Betty Ross might as well not have existed for all the times that Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) has mentioned the supposed love of his life (as in, not at all). So her getting wiped from existence doesn't make much of a difference.
Korg and Miek: Unconfirmed
Korg! Where is Korg? "Spoiler," said Joe. Darn, that doesn't make me feel better. I'm just going to believe that the hilarious fan-favorite Thor: Ragnarok character played by Taika Waititi made it off the Asgardian ship with Valkyrie.
Shuri: Unconfirmed
Shuri played an essential part in Infinity War, using her advanced technology to try to separate Vision's soul from the Mind Stone, but disappeared from the film after her lab was attacked by Thanos' incoming soldiers. Unfortunately, her fate is ultimately a "spoiler," according to Joe.
Lady Sif: Dead
It looks like Lady Sif avoided an untimely death by Hela only to be killed by the The Snap. The rest of the Warriors Three were killed in Hela's bloody conquest of Asgard, but thanks to Jaimie Alexander's busy schedule, Sif was somewhere off-world during the the slaughter of half of Asgard. But according to Joe Russo, Lady Sif is "gone" post-Snap. You deserved so much more, Sif.
Ned Leeds: Unconfirmed
"Spoiler," said Joe.
Ned got a brief appearance in Infinity War, helping Peter leave the school bus unnoticed to save the world. But that was the last we saw of him. With Spider-Man: Homecoming's sequel set to hit theaters after Avengers 4 however, there's a high possibility he made it through unscathed.
Aunt May: Alive
"Safe," said Anthony. Now some good news! Marisa Tomei's Aunt May, who Spider-Man: Homecoming really liked to remind us is super hot, is alive. We didn't get to see the fallout of May discovering Peter's identity, and with Peter now getting dusted, we may not find out. Though she'll probably have a few things to say to Tony.
Nakia: Unconfirmed
When asked why Nakia didn't appear in Infinity War, Joe Russo responded, "She's on missions." Anthony added, "Yeah, deep undercover." So does that undercover mission protect her from The Snap? We don't know for now, though we do know Black Panther 2 is on its way.
