The New Doctor Strange 2 Poster Teases A Connection To The What If...? Series
It seems the marketing campaign for "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" is taking the old adage "a picture is worth a thousand words" to heart. The first teaser poster featured a shimmering mirror image of Benedict Cumberbatch's Master of the Mystic Arts, and now the new official poster has the windows of Strange's Sanctum Sanctorum shattering behind him.
Within those images are the characters Strange will be encountering on his latest journey. Some of them will be friends, including his partner Wong (Benedict Wong) and the dimension-hopping America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez). Others will be foes, especially Baron Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor). And some, such as Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) don't exactly fall into one camp or the other. But the poster holds a hint to another character that could potentially show up in the film — and a connection to another one of Marvel Studios' Disney+ series that dabbled in multiversal madness.
Oh Captain, My Captain...Carter
One of the shards of glass reflects the image of the Union Jack — specifically, how it appears on the shield of Captain Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) in the Disney+ show. This all but confirms that Atwell will appear in some capacity in "Multiverse of Madness," and that the film will feature a connection to the "What If...?" series. In the animated anthology's premiere episode, Carter took the Super Soldier serum instead of Steve Rogers, wielding a Union Jack-design on her costume and shield.
"What If...?" was the first Marvel Studios project to fully explore the concept of the Multiverse, and it stands to reason it would play into the events of "Multiverse of Madness." Even the new trailer hints at a potential "What If...?" connection, with Strange encountering a darker version of himself. In one episode of the show, an alternate reality saw Strange literally destroying the universe in order to save the love of his life, Christine Palmer (Rachel McAdams, who also makes an appearance in both trailers). With Captain Carter's popularity growing to the point where she'll be headlining her own comic book miniseries, it's only natural that she appear in live-action as well.
