(Welcome to ...And More, our no-frills, zero B.S. guide to when and where you can watch upcoming movies and shows, and everything else you could possibly stand to know.)
George Clooney is back behind the camera with "The Tender Bar," a drama based on a true story. The film stars Ben Affleck as a bartender who bonds with his nephew, played by Tye Sheridan. "The Tender Bar" is arriving at the end of the year, which is coming up a lot sooner than you may realize. Below, I've rounded up some important info you might want to know before you check out "The Tender Bar." So pour yourself a drink and get ready.
The Tender Bar Release Date and Where to Watch It
Like so many movies these days, "The Tender Bar" is having a kind of hybrid theatrical/streaming release. Amazon Studios will first release the film in LA and NY theaters on December 17, 2021. It will then roll out to theaters nationwide on December 22, 2021. After that, it's hitting Amazon Prime Video, globally, on January 77, 2022. This release date strategy strongly suggests Amazon wants to push this one for awards season attention. Whether or not "The Tender Bar" receives that attention will be another matter.
What Is The Tender Bar?
"The Tender Bar" is a new film directed by George Clooney. Clooney is a hit-or-miss filmmaker; some of his directorial efforts, like "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind" and "Good Night, and Good Luck," are quite good. And then he has absolute dreck like "Suburbicon." Hopefully, this latest film will stack up better. "The Tender Bar" is based on the memoir of the same name by J. R. Moehringer. Here's the film's synopsis:
The Tender Bar tells the story of J.R. (Tye Sheridan), a fatherless boy growing up in the glow of a bar where the bartender, his Uncle Charlie (Ben Affleck), is the sharpest and most colorful of an assortment of quirky and demonstrative father figures. As the boy's determined mother (Lily Rabe) struggles to provide her son with opportunities denied to her — and leave the dilapidated home of her outrageous if begrudgingly supportive father (Christopher Lloyd) — J.R. begins to gamely, if not always gracefully, pursue his romantic and professional dreams — with one foot persistently placed in Uncle Charlie's bar. The Tender Bar is based on the best-selling memoir of the same name by J.R. Moehringer.
The Tender Bar Cast
"The Tender Bar" cast includes Ben Affleck, Tye Sheridan, Daniel Ranieri, Lily Rabe, Christopher Lloyd, Sondra James, Max Martini, Michael Braun, Matthew Delamater, Max Casella, Rhenzy Feliz, Ivan Leung, and Briana Middleton.
The Tender Bar Director, Writer, and More
"The Tender Bar" was directed by George Clooney. The screenplay was penned by William Monahan, based on the memoir by J. R. Moehringer. George Clooney, Grant Heslov, and Ted Hope are the film's producers. Martin Ruhe is the cinematographer. I can't find anyone listed as the film's score composer yet, so stay tuned for that news – unless "The Tender Bar" has absolutely no music in it. Which I doubt.
