Uncut Gems

This is how you win: by watching Uncut Gems on Netflix. Adam Sandler turns in one of his best performances as a Diamond District salesman with an obsessive gambling problem. Sandler's addiction to gambling gets him into trouble from the beginning of the film all the way until the explosive climax, and directors the Safdie Brothers milk the character's plight for all its worth, crafting an almost unbearably tense, bleakly hilarious saga.

back to the future 4

Back to the Future

Here's a little underrated indie you've never heard of! I'm kidding, of course. Back to the Future still holds up – although it does have some questionable content here and there – as a well-crafted, entertaining blockbuster. Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd are great together, and it's a fun reminder of a time when Robert Zemeckis was interested in making movies about people instead of weird motion-capture nightmares. You know the story: teen goes back in time, meets his parents, and has to force them to fall in love. And hey, Netflix is actually adding the entire Back to the Future trilogy in May, so you can watch the two inferior sequels as well!

den of thieves trash

Den of Thieves

Like a dirtball remake of Heat (with a little The Usual Suspects thrown in for some reason), Den of Thieves is trash at its finest. It doesn't have an original idea in its head, but this tale of cops and robbers is slick and greasy in all the best ways, like fast food you get a craving for at 2 A.M. Gerard Butler is a cop who is constantly drunk, and when he's not drunk, he's chugging Pepto, or eating donuts from crime scenes. It's a wonder to behold.

Sinister Lawnmower Scene

Sinister

Sinister is such a great little horror flick – the type that understands just how creepy old home movies can be. And how fascinating it is to watch a character lose themselves as they investigate something, well, sinister (see also: Zodiac). Ethan Hawke is a true crime writer who moves his family into the scene of a grisly murder, all in the hopes of writing a new book. But his investigation clues him in to similar murders that stretch across time, and which might have a supernatural element to them. Be on the lookout for one of the best jump-scares of all time.

Jarhead

Sam Mendes' somewhat overlooked anti-war film Jardhead features a great performance from Jake Gyllenhaal as a Marine during the first Gulf War. And when I say this is an anti-war film, I mean it almost literally – there's zero action here. No fights, no battles. People don't even really fire their guns. That may sound boring, but it's ultimately a great, and fairly somber, experience – complete with killer cinematography via Roger Deakins.Netflix instant replay
