This 'Deadpool 2' Theory Suggests A Secret Relationship Between Two Main Characters
Are two characters in Deadpool 2 involved in a secret relationship? A wacky new theory has laid out all the evidence, and when you pair that with some information we know about the making of the sequel, it's starting to sound pretty convincing. Discover this odd (but plausible!) Deadpool 2 theory below.
Before we go any further, I want to make something absolutely clear: this article will give away huge spoilers for the events of Deadpool 2. Do not, under any circumstances, read any further if you haven't seen the movie yet and if you care about preserving your theatrical experience.
Deadpool 2 Theory (Spoilers Ahead)
With the time-traveling Cable (Josh Brolin) in the mix for Deadpool 2, it was inevitable that someone would come up with a theory which links him to the lineage of one of the characters in this movie. And while I assumed someone would try to make the case that Cable is Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds)'s son, this theory from CinemaBlend instead suggests that the two are related in a different way.
The theory claims Deadpool may be the father of Cable's wife. In the movie, Cable talks about how his wife (who was killed in the future by Julian Dennison's Russell) was funny like Wade Wilson/Deadpool, and the site counts that as a piece of evidence: maybe Cable's wife inherited her sense of humor from her father.
That's admittedly flimsy on its own, but there's more. Despite being at each other's throats for most of the film, Cable uses his last burst of time travel tech to go back in time and save Deadpool from dying instead of returning to his own family. When Deadpool asks why Cable made that decision, Cable replies that his family is safe now and that he's decided to stick around to try to prevent the world from becoming the hell-hole he knows from his future timeline. That's a good set-up for an X-Force movie, but it's also a sly way to imply that Wade/Deadpool had to survive in order for Cable's family to survive. Not only does Deadpool alter Russell's destiny, but maybe he also goes on to father a daughter that grows up to marry Cable.
Wade and Vanessa (Morena Baccarin) have multiple conversations about having children in Deadpool 2, and Wade learns about selflessness over the course of the movie. What if those conversations weren't only meant to foreshadow Wade's relationship with Russell, but also to plant the idea of their eventual daughter marrying Cable? In mid-credits scenes, we learn that Deadpool uses Cable's time travel device to go back in time to save Vanessa, so we know she's going to be alive in future movies. And knowing writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick's affinity for jokes, they're probably doing backflips at the prospect of writing hilarious in-law jokes between Deadpool and Cable for a future film.
More Evidence
Starting to sound pretty convincing, right? There's one more piece of evidence that adds to the theory's plausibility: the initial idea for the movie involved Deadpool and Vanessa actually having a child. Earlier this month, Reynolds (who co-wrote the script with Reese and Wernick) told Entertainment Weekly:
"The genesis of it was "What if Deadpool had a child?" Like, what if we started five years later and what would that be like? By page 1.5, it was totally untenable. We were just like, 'Nope. Nope. No, no, no. This is never, ever going to work.' We went back to the drawing board and kind of reworked it in a way about wanting to have a child..."
With the writing team knowing Cable was a given to appear in this film (remember, that character was teased in the first movie's post-credits scene), it seems increasingly likely that these ideas at least crossed their minds at some point in the process. We'll have to wait and see if these were just seeds being planted that will pay off in X-Force or Deadpool 3, or if it's just fans reading far too much into the film.
It's also worth mentioning that in the comics, Cable is the son of X-Men member Cyclops (who briefly appeared in Deadpool 2). The X-Men movie timeline is so out of whack that the writers may not bother to keep that particular connection alive in these movies. I can't imagine Tye Sheridan's Scott Summers interacting with Brolin's Cable in any meaningful way in these movies, but I could see the writers deciding to keep the family unit cordoned off into this separate sub-franchise.
