'Avengers: Infinity War' Features 76 Characters – Here Are The 44 We Know About
Avengers: Infinity War is the culmination of 18 movies over the course of 10 years — a whole cinematic universe reaching its zenith in a battle for the fate of humanity and beyond. Directors Joe and Anthony Russo have a lot on their plate juggling the multiple storylines that have led to this film, not to mention the plethora of characters that will populate the story.
So just how many comic book characters will appear in Infinity War? No exact number has been confirmed yet, but previous reports confirm that it will be more than 60. Now we have the latest (still to-be-confirmed) number from star Chris Hemsworth: 76.
More than 70 characters will appear in Infinity War, Hemsworth told Postmedia Network in an interview — a step up from the previous reports of up to 67 characters appearing in the film. Hemsworth says:
"This is one of the biggest things in film history and to be a part of it was just incredible. I think what these characters are about to face — with Thanos — there's been nothing quite like it. There are 76 cast members or something like that."
Now this is not a final exact number — it does sound to me like Hemsworth is estimating that total number rather than confirming it — but it provides us a nice ballpark for what to expect in the gargantuan superhero ensemble movie.
So far, approximately 34 old and new characters are confirmed to appear in Avengers: Infinity War.
The Confirmed Appearances
The last four are Thanos' Black Order henchman, who are all confirmed to appear in Infinity War, even if the actors playing them have not been announced. We saw a glimpse of Proxima Midnight in the Infinity War trailer, but the others will definitely join her in the film to do Thanos' bidding.
The Probable Appearances
Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson): Thompson is all but confirmed to appear as Valkyrie in Infinity War, following an Instagram photo the actress posted on the set of the movie. Plus, Valkyrie is on the Asgardian ship that Thor and Loki are on before they're attacked by Thanos (as seen in the mid-credits scene of Thor: Ragnarok), and she's too much of a fighter to be taken down by a mere ship crash.Ned Leeds (Jacob Batalan): Where would Peter Parker be without his best bro and tech support? Batalan's Ned Leeds is virtually inseparable from Holland's Peter Parker, and you can count on at least a quick cameo alongside Peter's other classmates who are rumored to appear.
The Rumored Appearances
Sally Avril (Isabelle Amara): Remember when I said Peter's classmates were rumored to appear in Infinity War? It's thanks to a statement by Isabelle Amara, who plays Peter's classmate and debate team compatriot, Sally. She's a glorified background character, as are the following three debate team members:
Yondu (Michael Rooker): This one's a bit confusing, as Yondu is definitely dead post-Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. James Gunn has confirmed his deadness, and no, he's never bringing him back to life. But. Rooker was seen in Georgia near the Infinity War set and at one point claimed to be in a make-up trailer — which could point to an Infinity War appearance. How is that possible? Time travel, baby. Or it was Rooker just trolling us all.Red Skull (Hugo Weaving): Speaking of time travel, there's a longshot rumor that the reported time travel plot of Avengers 4 could make way for old, long-gone characters to return. Or, at least, through a flashback scene. One of these rumored flashbacks could involve Hugo Weaving's Red Skull, one of the first humans to discover an Infinity Stone on Earth, and a character whose fate was left uncertain at the end of Captain America: The First Avenger. Take this one with a huge grain of salt, because Weaving has publicly denounced his multi-film contract with Marvel — though that doesn't mean he won't honor it.Magus: Magus is the "dark side" of Adam Warlock, one of the more obscure heroes of the Marvel comics and Thanos' main foe. Magus was rumored to be the second "main villain" after Thanos. Adam Warlock was vaguely hinted at in the credits of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, but there's no indication that Adam is a real entity in the MCU yet. This is a rumor that has long been circulating the interwebs and will probably dog Infinity War until the movie's release. But I don't foresee Magus showing up in Infinity War with Adam existing as nothing more than a brief mention.
Who Else is Left?
So that leaves approximately 32 characters left unaccounted for. The big one is Nick Fury, who initially united the Avengers in 2012's Avengers. Samuel L. Jackson claimed that he wouldn't appear in either Infinity War or Avengers 4, but his absence would be hugely felt. Other possible characters include Emily VanCamp's Agent 13, Michael Douglas' Hank Pym, Evangeline Lilly's Hope van Dyne, Zendaya's Michelle, Marisa Tomei's Aunt May, Gwyneth Paltrow's Pepper Potts, Jon Favreau's Happy Hogan, Idris Elba's Heimdall, and Stellan Skarsgard's Dr. Erik Selvig. While I don't think Brie Larson's Captain Marvel will show in Infinity War, she will likely appear in Avengers 4 after her solo movie hits theaters in 2019.
Who else do you think could appear in Avengers: Infinity War?
Avengers: Infinity War is set to hit theaters on May 4, 2018.
