'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' Has First Order BB Droids And An Odd New Look For Snoke
Last week brought plenty of new details about Star Wars: The Last Jedi thanks to Vanity Fair's big cover story on the sci-fi sequel coming to theaters late this year. Not only did we get a glimpse at new characters, but we also learned some surprising details about the characters introduced in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
Now even more information has come to the surface, thanks to leaked images of some merchandise that will be hitting shelves on September 1 this fall for the big Force Friday II event leading up to the release of The Last Jedi. However, if you want to go into The Last Jedi blindly, I wouldn't read after the jump since the photos confirm some rumors that have been making the rounds online. We'll discuss and speculate on what they'll mean for the movie after the jump. You've been warned!
Since these are leaked photos, we won't post them here, but MakingStarWars.net has the images that were posted on Instagram, and they've helped break down the information confirmed from previous rumors.
The images in question are the boxes for a few LEGO sets that will be released this fall. One is for a First Order Star Destroyer, another is a First Order heavy assault walker, and the last one is a Resistance bomber. First let's talk about these vehicles themselves.
The First Order Star Destroyer looks exactly like the one seen in The Force Awakens. However, the assault walker looks a little different from those that could be glimpsed in the wide shot of First Order artillery in The Force Awakens while General Hux gives his speech. These are presumably the walkers seen in the distance of that shot on Crait, the new planet with red dust that blows up from the ground. Finally, the Resistance bomber is one of the fleet of vehicles that we see in one of the closing shots of The Last Jedi teaser trailer, as seen below.
What's more interesting are the LEGO minifigures that come with each of the sets.
The First Order heavy assault walker set comes with Rey, complete with her new hairdo and a lightsaber. That might mean that she's involved on the action sequence on Crait, but we're not sure what she's doing on the planet. In the image on the front box she's seen on the ground brandishing her lightsaber around the feet of the walker, but that's not necessarily indicative of what she'll be doing in the movie. Aside from a Resistance trooper and the First Order walker driver and Stormtrooper, there's also Poe Dameron, who has now been given the title of Captain.
Meanwhile, the Resistance bomber comes with a pilot and a bombardier, as well as the recently revealed character
, played by Laura Dern. There will also be a Poe Dameron figure, though he's not given the designation of Captain on the box, so that must be a rank that he earns as the movie goes on, which indicates that the space battle we've seen a glimpse of in The Last Jedi trailer may happen pretty early in the movie. The other minifigure is "Resistance Gunner Paige," and as we learned from Vanity Fair's story, Paige is the sister of Kelly Marie Tran's new character Rose Tico. Finally, the most interesting information comes from the third leaked LEGO set, the First Order Star Destroyer. The minifigures included in that are some standard First Order Stormtroopers, including a sergeant, along with and officer and a shuttle pilot. But the other two minifigures are the ones that really piqued our interest.
Confirming rumors from the set, the First Order has BB units of their own. This ball droid is black with either silver or white accents, and he appears to be named BB-9E, though it's hard to tell since the glare on the box is near that part of the image. This shouldn't be a big surprise since the Empire previously had their own versions of Astromech droids and even protocol droids that looked like C-3PO. I wonder if BB-8 will have an encounter with one of these droids and teach it a lesson.
The final minifigure is the one that surprises us the most though. It's a minifigure of Supreme Leader Snoke, except he looks nothing like he did in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. We're not just talking about a disparity between how humans look compared to LEGO minifigures either. First of all, the minifigure is normal flesh-toned, not pale white as he appeared in the hologram from which we saw him in The Force Awakens. And he's wearing a gold robe, something that was also mentioned in a previous report of Star Wars The Last Jedi Snoke rumors.
The pale appearance of Snoke from The Force Awakens may have been because of the hologram itself, so maybe Snoke has always had a normal flesh tone (there does appear to be a warmer color in parts of his face in the top image). As for the gold robe, we're not sure what that signifies, but it makes him look like some kind of douchebag executive. It's quite the departure from the black cloak/robe that he appeared to be wearing in the hologram. The difference in appearance makes me wonder if maybe there's some kind of Wizard of Oz scenario happening here where Snoke appears more intimidating in hologram form than he does in real life.
Anyway, these are some interesting details to take notice of, and we're bound to get more glimpses of characters, vehicles and more from The Last Jedi as we inch closer for Force Friday II on September 1. Of course, we'll keep an eye on all the important details as they become available.
