The Best Movies Coming To Netflix In December 2016

We're coming up on the last month of 2016, and Netflix has a great batch of new titles coming to their streaming library to close out the year. There's a wide variety of nostalgic movies from the 1990s, some great documentaries, new Netflix original programming and stand-up comedy specials, and even a couple movies that hit theaters earlier this year.

Disney just doesn't make live-action adventure movies like this anymore. Honestly, I'm surprised the studio hasn't yet tried to remake this movie now that technology makes it easier to create such a movie with visual effects. Even though Rick Moranis is top-billed in this movie, it mostly focuses on his two kids as they and the neighbor siblings find themselves accidentally shrunk by their inventor father's latest invention. What follows is an adventure through the backyard as they try to get back home and get big again. Available December 1st.

This is arguably Michael Bay's best movie, and it's all thanks to the performances by Sean Connery, Nicolas Cage, and Ed Harris. It also helps that the action is spectacular, and Bay doesn't even need giant robots or world-ending asteroids to make it work. Perhaps the movie is helped by the fact that both Aaron Sorkin and Quentin Tarantino did uncredited rewrites on the script. Available December 1st.

Even though the sequel to Disney's The Mighty Ducks isn't quite as good as the first, it's actually my favorite. The incorporation of some new players to form Team USA bring some fun to the table, including young Kenan Thompson and his famous knucklepuck. It should also be noted that the score by David Newman has one of the best orchestral sports themes. It's not quite as good as "The Final Game" from Rudy but it's still great. Available December 1st.

Take a trip back to a time when Eddie Murphy used to make good movies. Beverly Hills Cop isn't quite as action-packed as the action comedies of today, but that's actually what makes it work a little better. There's no spectacle to detract from how good Eddie Murphy was in the 1980s. It may take a few days to get that synthesized theme out of your head, but it'll be worth it. Available December 1st.

Last year we lost Star Trek icon Leonard Nimoy, and this year we get the chance to look back at his life and career, specifically his time spent as Mr. Spock, in this documentary talking to those who knew him best. William Shatner, George Takei, Simon Pegg and more share their fond memories and stories from working with Nimoy on the franchise that made him a household name. Available December 1st.

Marvel's massive superhero battle is coming to Netflix for you to watch over and over again. Captain America and Iron Man cause a divide in the Avengers as they disagree over whether or not they need government oversight. The battle that ensues is one of the best action sequences the big screen has ever seen. And let's not forget to mention the introduction of a new Spider-Man and a new superhero in the form of Black Panther. We're going to be feeling the effects of this sequel in the Marvel cinematic universe for years to come.
