More 'Logan' Characters Revealed: Who'll Appear In Hugh Jackman's Final Wolverine Movie?
We've known for some time now who would star in Logan, Hugh Jackman's next and last film as Wolverine. We just haven't heard much about which characters they would be playing (well, aside from Wolverine and Patrick Stewart as Professor X, of course). But thankfully, that's starting to change. Yesterday we learned Boyd Holbrook would be playing the villain Donald Pierce, and today we've got details on two more characters who'll be prominently featured in the X-Men spinoff.
According to TheWrap, Sienna Novikov will play Laura a.k.a. X-23, the little girl whose hand can be seen in the Logan poster, and Richard E. Grant is playing Dr. Zander Rice, a mad scientist type. Both characters originated in the comics.
Logan is set in the year 2024, when mutant births are in severe decline for reasons unknown. Meanwhile, a shadowy operation called Transigen is turning mutant kids into killing machines. Logan (Wolverine) is sick — his powers have greatly diminished and he is in a state of chronic pain, which he self-treats by drowning himself in booze — and Professor X's abilities have become destabilized. Stephen Merchant plays Caliban, a mutant who helps Wolverine care for Professor X.
Laura, also known as X-23, is one of the kids who gets caught up in Transigen's plans. Like Wolverine, X-23 has a regenerative healing factor and retractable adamantium-covered claws, as well as superhuman speed, strength, stamina, senses, and reflexes. In the film, Wolverine will take Laura under his wing.
As for Dr. Zander Rice, he's the guy behind Transigen, a shady global corporation that has Donald Pierce as their head of security. In the comics, Zander Rice leads the project that creates X-23. He also happens to be the son of Dale Rice, who worked on the original Weapon X project that gave rise to Wolverine before he died at Wolverine's hands. By the way, this means Grant will not play Mister Sinister, as has previously been speculated. Indeed, TheWrap claims Mister Sinister won't figure into Logan at all, despite X-Men: Apocalypse director Bryan Singer's earlier hints that he would.
Directed by James Mangold, Logan arrives March 3, 2017.
