Cool Stuff: Epic 'Lord Of The Rings' & 'The Hobbit' Box Set To Rule Them All
Both The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies have seen multiple releases on home video. In fact, I've lost count of just how many different home video releases there have been of Lord of the Rings. But now the definitive collection of all six extended cuts of Peter Jackson's Middle Earth films is coming this fall, and it's undoubtedly the one box set to rule them all.

Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit Box Set Revealed
Earlier today, a new listing arrived on Amazon called the Middle Earth Limited Collector's Edition. The box set features 30 Blu-ray discs of footage which includes the extended cuts of The Hobbit films An Unexpected Journey, The Desolation of Smaug and The Battle of the Five Armies and the extended cuts of the Lord of the Rings films The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and Return of the King. Each movie will come in a faux-leather-bound bookcase that sits on a wooden shelf that was apparently "crafted from solid wood with a design selected by Peter Jackson."
In addition to the films, the box set will include all of the previously released special features, including the incredible, in-depth behind the scenes documentaries, showing the most revealing look at the making of a blockbuster movie that we've ever seen.
Finally, as an extra bonus, the box set comes with a replica of the Red Book of Westmarch, which is the very same book that Bilbo Baggins (Ian Holm and Martin Freeman) and Frodo Baggins (Elijah Wood) write about their adventures in to bookend both movie trilogies. Inside the book won't be blank pages, but concept art from the film, including pieces by Alan Lee and John Howe.
So the big question is how much is this going to cost? Well, the product page has since been stripped of details, but an $800 price tag was listed on the product page. That seems a bit costly for two sets of movies, one of which has been available for nearly 15 years, even with the special collector's items and packaging. The set is still listed for release on October 4th at the official product page, even though you can's pre-order it right now. We'll likely get more official details soon, so stay tuned.
