8 Things We Learned About 'Star Wars Rebels' Season 3
Star Wars Rebels Season 3 won't air on television until this Fall, but series creator Dave Filoni came to Star Wars Celebration Europe 2016 to premiere the two-episode season premiere and participate in a panel discussion about the upcoming season. What did we learn about the future of the acclaimed Disney XD animated series? Get all the important details from the Star Wars Rebels season 3 panel after the jump.
Ashoka Might Not Be Dead
Yoda says a lot of things to Anakin, that death is a part of life. And what happened to Ashoka was something he had discussed with George Lucas and planning for over a decade. He originally had hoped to do it in Clone Wars, but when that was canceled he assumed he had lost that opportunity. But Star Wars Rebels has allowed him to complete his original plans. As for if Ashoka is dead, Dave admits that it would be hard to kill off a character he likes as much as Ashoka. But he did say that "Its likely you haven't seen the last of her."
The Ghost Crew Gets New Looks
The style of the characters are starting to line up the style of how characters look in A New Hope and Rogue One as we're getting closer in to that timeline. For example, Zeb has less armor now and a style that fits in more with aliens from the original trilogy.
Kanan has a new look. His eyes are clouded now that he is blind. He now sports a beard and a black mask. The experience has changed the way he looks at life and he will hopefully be a better Jedi because of it.
Ezra also has a new look, some scars on his face and a new haircut, as well as a more teenager-like attitude.
Sabine has a new hair color that transitions from white on the top to purple. We will learn a lot more about her character in the upcoming season, including interactions with other Mandalorians, some of whom she might even be related to. She will have to face her past in a tangible way.
Sabine Gets Some Cool New Tech
We also find out that she finally gets a jetpack. They showed a clip from season 3 that features Sabine, Ezra and Chopper escaping from Mandalorians in a jetpack chase which was pretty awesome for an animated series.
They showed another image of Sabine holding a dark saber, a sword-looking lightsaber with a black blade with a white glow. They wouldn't reveal how she got the dark saber or how it plays into this season's story.
What Is Maul Up To?
Maul is coming to grips with what life means. He has fallen from a place where he was once the second most powerful person in the galaxy and is searching for a purpose. Maul is looking a legacy and an apprentice, and he sees that in Ezra. It doesn't come from a place of selflessness but selfishness.
Will Maul Kill Kannan?
We were shown a clip where Ezra and Kanan meet with Maul, who has their held their friends captive. Maul tries to kill Kanan again pushing him out an airlock in the spaceship out into space itself. Filoni won't reveal Kanan's fate.
An interesting bit of trivia is that this scene takes place on a (digital) set that was originally created for an episode of Clone Wars for Maul's arc, but they repurposed the designs for Rebels.
New Characters Will Be Introduced
Will Other Legends Characters Be Introduced?
Fan favorite Legends character Grand Admiral Thrawn has re-entered Star Wars canon in this upcoming season, but what about resurrecting other fan favorites? Someone asked if Filoni could bring Mara Jade back and he sadly replied that its "not likely."
Will Maz Kanata Appear In Rebels?
An audience member asked that considering Star Wars: The Force Awaken's Maz Kanata is 1000 years old, could she appear in Rebels. Filoni responded "Thats a great idea." The audience seemed to like the idea, and Dave responded to the crowd's reaction with "You have a good mind for this sort of thing, but that doesn't mean that we're doing that."
Star Wars Rebels Season 3 will premiere in fall 2016.
