The sixth season of Game of Thrones is nearly upon us, and it sounds like we should enjoy every single hour that we get since the final two seasons of the show may be much shorter than expected. While we wait, there's no better time to take a look at the visual effects that bring the fantasy world of Westeros to life.
A show like this wouldn't have been possible 10 years ago, but advancements in technology and a shift in the popularity of television programming has allowed for bigger budgets and more impressive post-production work. A new Game of Thrones visual effects featurette shows how the crew was able to bring giants, dragons and white walkers to life in the fifth season of the show, not to mention creating many of the settings we see in every episode.

Just the talk about the massive green screen walls was impressive enough. But nothing beats seeing a flame thrower fixed on a crane, whipping around an arena in place of a dragon. Even if there wasn't a dragon in Game of Thrones, just a crane shooting fire is terrifying enough.
