Daisy Ridley Suggests Rey's Mother Is Probably Not Jyn Erso From 'Rogue One' So Keep Guessing

After the pure excitement from the debut of the Rogue One: A Star Wars Story trailer died down, people started picking apart the trailer frame by frame (and that includes us). One of the more popular theories about what we saw in the trailer was that Jyn Erso, the lead rebel character played by Felicity Jones, might be the mother of our new favorite future Jedi, Rey from Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

There weren't really any clear hints that this theory could be true beyond the fact that Jyn Erso was white, brunette, had a British accent, had a similar background to Rey, and shared some common facial features. Plus, Jyn could easily have a child sometime between A New Hope and The Force Awakens who could have grown up to be the stranded Jakku orphan. That's not exactly the strongest evidence, but the theory gained traction and fans thought it made sense.

Unfortunately, Daisy Ridley has just put out that fire by debunking the theory about Rey's mother in Star Wars.

Speaking with MTV at the MTV Movie Awards, The Force Awakens star was quick to throw that rumor out the window:

"I'm not being funny, you guys, but just because she's white and got brown hair ... it doesn't mean she's my mom."

However, it's what she said after that which is a little more interesting:

"I think the amazing thing about [The Force Awakens] is that Finn and Rey don't come from anywhere, and they find a place. So to me, it's funny that people think it's so important, because I don't really think it is."

Maybe that means Rey won't actually be related to any of the main characters we've come to know in the Star Wars universe. Maybe she won't even be related to any characters we've already met at all. That would be the best way to broaden the spectrum of characters even more. The galaxy is already small enough with the Skywalker and Solo family affecting much of the fate of the galaxy, so why not take this opportunity to expand into another family tree?

My theory is that Rey was a student among Luke's new order of Jedi at a very young age. Maybe she was orphaned and Luke took her under his wing, sensing that The Force was strong with her. Maybe Kylo Ren felt a little slighted by his uncle and began to turn to the dark side. Eventually he joins the Knights of Ren, they come and kill all of Luke's students, as we see in Rey's Force vision, but Luke is able to protect and save Rey. But knowing how powerful she can be, he takes her to Jakku, hidden from the First Order and the dark side.

There are infinite possibilities for the origins of Rey, but we're glad that her mother isn't someone as obvious and easy to figure out as Jyn Erso from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. If anything, their lack of connection just continues to make the Star Wars universe even bigger.
