That much was clear from the very first moment we laid eyes on the so-called "soccer ball droid."
A new featurette digs into the cutest new droid in the galaxy, spelling out his humble beginnings as a napkin sketch by J.J. Abrams and the actors' experiences working with him on set. And there are absolutely no spoilers involved, which makes it the perfect way to kill a few moments while you're counting down the minutes until you're sitting in that theater. Watch the BB-8 featurette after the jump.
BB-8's personality is apparently as sweet as his appearance. John Boyega describes him as "so charismatic" and "a little bit feisty," while engaging in a bit of fan speculation of his own: "I'm starting to wonder whether R2-D2 is a distant cousin." But it's Oscar Isaac who really nails what's so great about BB-8. "His design is so ingenious because it feels like I've seen it before. It feels like it's familiar to the Star Wars universe," says Isaac. "But it's not. It's completely new."
And isn't that what we really want from Star Wars: The Force Awakens, in a nutshell? A film that'll bring back the Star Wars spirit we know and love, while introducing new characters and opening new doors for a whole new generation? The Force Awakens has a lot riding on its shoulders, and we'll find out in a few hours whether it proves able to bear that load.
