VOTD: Bill Nye And Neil deGrasse Tyson Give 'Star Trek' The Advantage Over 'Star Wars'
The world premiere for Star Wars: The Force Awakens just happened in Los Angeles last night, and this week brings the worldwide release of the film for everybody to see. Therefore, it might not be the best time to throw shade at the galaxy far, far away. But using scientific reasoning and logic, both Bill Nye and Neil deGrasse Tyson give Star Trek the advantage over Star Wars, hot on the heels of the first Star Trek Beyond trailer. Find out why below!
First up, here's Neil deGrasse Tyson explaining why the Enterprise is better than the Millennium Falcon:
It's hard to argue with the fact that the Enterprise is a bigger ship run by an entire crew of people who each of their own responsibilities to keep the ship up and running. But at the same time, the Enterprise seems to get its ass kicked a lot more often than the Falcon, and it doesn't seem to have the maneuvering capabilities because of its size. Since Tyson is a scientist though, his preference for a vessel seeking scientific discovery just makes sense, so we'll let this Star Wars vs Star Trek argument slide.
Bill Nye on the other hand hits Star Wars a little harder in the gut:
Basically, he disregards Star Wars in favor of Star Trek simply because the former has the Force, and that's not dissimilar from magic or a religion, something that Nye just doesn't buy because he's a scientist. But with Star Trek, there's an optimistic view of the future with a lot of real science tied into the fiction side of things. Again, it's hard to argue with his preference due to his reasoning, and at least he doesn't say that he dislikes Star Wars. But these are movies we're talking about, so letting science take a back seat to adventure and fun is fine every now and then.
