When Will We See Hope Van Dyne As The Wasp? Kevin Feige Responds!
Yes, its true that you do get to see which involves Janet Van Dyne's version of The Wasp in Ant-Man, via a flashback sequence (I won't say anything more here). But the real question everyone is wondering is when will we see Hope Van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) , daughter of the original Ant-Man Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) and the original Wasp Janet Van Dyne, put on The Wasp outfit as she does in the comics? I asked Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige and actually got an answer.
Warning, spoilers follow for Ant-Man.
In Ant-Man, Hank Pym recruits Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) to help him pull of a heist. One of the subplots of the film is that he wants to protect his daughter Hope Van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) from possible harm. One of the Ant-Man credits scenes involves Hope being led into a secret chamber to reveal a never-before-seen Wasp suit. Hank Pym reveals that he and her mother Janet were working on the suit before she died, and that he's finally realized they were making it for Hope. She smiles and responds, "It's about damn time."
So when might we see Hope Van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) suit up as the new Wasp and go into action? I asked Marvel head Kevin Feige a few weeks back, and here is what he told me:
"It's a good question, and it will certainly be in phase three. Where exactly in phase three I'm not sure, but it won't be in Civil War."
So while we are expected to see Paul Rudd back as Ant-Man in Captain America: Civil War, don't expect to see Evangeline Lilly as The Wasp in that film. Feige admits that the character was originally written into the Civil War screenplay:
"She was included in early versions of Civil War but there are so many characters in Civil War that we didn't want to do her a disservice, like she flies in, 'I've got the costume now', and she flies out. With Ant-Man, and I'm not saying thats what Ant-Man does in the movie, but we already know him, we've already seen him. We haven't seen her as Wasp and we don't want to rob the opportunity of seeing her in the outfit for at least almost the first time, and seeing her dynamic with Scott in a way it could play out, so we're saving it. But its going to be in Phase three for sure."
So we will see Hope Van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) in action as The Wasp by May 3rd 2019, which is the conclusion of Marvel's Phase three in The Avengers: Infinity War – Part II.
Of course, its obvious the character, and all the characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for that matter, will be involved in the two part epic Infinity War event. I would expect we will see Hope as The Wasp in or before The Avengers: Infinity War – Part I. It seems unlikely the character's triumphant first appearance will take place in one the films leading up to that event, Doctor Strange, Guardians Vol 2, Spider-Man or Thor: Ragnarok, but you never know. Kevin Feige wouldn't say no to the possibility of doing an Ant-Man 2 before Infinity War, but its not likely.
