'Inside Out' Adds Kyle MacLachlan And Diane Lane As Riley's Parents
Pixar's Inside Out will be all about the emotions guiding 11-year-old Riley (Kaitlyn Dias), but it'll also feature some of the outside influences that figure into her thinking — namely her parents, who'll be voiced by Kyle MacLachlan and Diane Lane. And the film will go inside their minds as well.
Hit the jump for more about the Inside Out parents, including details on what their emotional headquarters will look like and new comments from writer/director Pete Docter about the story.
Docter explained the role of the parents to USA Today. "I started out doing a film about growing up, but it turned out it's a film about me watching my kids grow up," he said. "These parents are realizing that their kid is changing. That's difficult. But it is a part of life."
He continued, "These guys are the pillars on both sides. They are pivotal parts, knowing how joyful this kid Riley used to be and the young woman she's changing into."
Whereas Riley's mind will be filled with literally colorful characters like Joy (Amy Poehler), Anger (Lewis Black), Fear (Bill Hader), Disgust (Mindy Kaling), and Sadness (Phyllis Smith), her parents will be more "rooted in reality and very truthful."
Just as Riley's mind is uniquely hers, her parents' emotional HQs will reflect their personalities. Dad has a mind like a Norad missile defense site, with all of the emotions wearing mustaches. Mom's looks more like something out of The View, with emotions in red glasses engaging in civil discussion.
The ability to look inside these characters' minds will expose the many complex layers behind seemingly mundane interactions. "We're intercutting to show what's going on inside each of their heads behind the scenes," reveals Docter. "What seems like a simple family dinner is actually fraught with all sorts of emotional angst and drama."
Inside Out lands in theaters June 19, 2014.
