'The Age Of Adaline' Trailer: Blake Lively Reveals The Downside Of Staying Young And Beautiful

You'd think eternal youth and immortality would be gifts, but in TV and movies it's as often as not a curse. Vampires and mutants alike angst over the unfairness of having to remain young and beautiful while the world spins on. And in The Age of Adaline, Blake Lively joins the pity party.

The Gossip Girl alum plays a 27-year-old woman rendered ageless thanks to a freak accident in the 1930s. As her loved ones start to grow old and die off, she becomes withdrawn — until a handsome man (Michiel Huisman, a.k.a. Daario Naharis v2.0 from Game of Thrones) draws her out of her shell. Ellen Burstyn and Harrison Ford also star. Watch the Age of Adaline trailer after the jump.

"It sounds like wish fulfillment to look like Blake Lively forever. But she cannot grow old with anyone," director Lee Toland Krieger told USA Today. "In a world consumed with youth and vanity, there's something very fresh and beautiful about a story focusing on the beauty of growing old."

For one thing, getting old means never having to watch your children age past you. While Adaline remains stuck at 27, her daughter continues to age normally. In the present day, the daughter is played by 81-year-old Burstyn, who must be getting used to having much-younger co-stars as parents. "It was one of the elements of the film I was most nervous about," Krieger recalled. "But you instantly believe them as mother and daughter. I know it sounds a bit crazy."

It's not until Adaline meets Huisman's haracter that she opens herself up to love again. He takes her to meet his parents, played by Harrison Ford and Kathy Baker — and based on the trailer, it looks like Ford might actually be someone she knew once upon a time.

Somehow, I doubt The Age of Adaline will break Hollywood's obsession with youth and beauty. Still, it might be fun to visit an upside-down world where looking like Blake Lively for decades on end is the worst thing in the world. The Age of Adaline opens April 24, 2015.
