Sequel Bits: 'Better Call Saul', 'Annabelle', 'The Purge 3', 'Magic Mike XXL'
Laika isn't making a sequel to The Boxtrolls, because it just doesn't want to. Which is not something we hear a lot around these parts. Also after the jump:
The Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters 2 script is finally in, according to writer-director Tommy Wirkola.
I've written the script for it. I've given it to Paramount and it's up to them now. But I don't know what's going to happen. Jeremy [Renner] is so busy these days, I don't know how they're going to juggle all of that, but it's up to [Paramount]. We'll see. Hopefully, I'll get to do another film first. They really liked the script I gave them. The first film was a learning curve for me working in the studio system and the script I wrote for the original was so different. We ended up taking a lot out and altering stuff that first time. I'm smarter now. I tried taking what I learned and still delivered a sequel script that's an R-rated action film.
As of right now, not only is Jeremy Renner not confirmed for Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters 2, he hasn't even been contacted yet. But for the record, he's game to come back — provided he can make the scheduling work. "It's always an obstacle at this point. It's good to be busy, right?" he laughed. "It'll come down to availability I'm sure." [Cinema Blend]
No one knows at this point what'll happen in The Purge 3, but Michael K. Williams, for one, is pretty sure we have not seen the last of his character. The actor says he will "most definitely" be back as Carmelo Jones, who Williams claims was "set up" by the authorities. Though set up for what, he wouldn't say. [Cinema Blend]
Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb is getting trippy with its latest poster, inspired by the mind-bending art of M.C. Escher. If you think this looks confusing, just imagine how museum guard Larry Daley (Ben Stiller) feels. At least you don't have to deal with exhibits that come to life.
Magic Mike XXL may have lost a Matthew McConaughey, but it could gain a... you. Channing Tatum has announced an opportunity for one lucky fan to "get up close and personal with the men of Magic Mike." The contest runs through September 29. More details can be found here.

Better Call Saul will feature the reappearance of Saul's disappearer. "They are doing a reboot of Breaking Bad, and though I have not been told a date I have not been told a date, I have been told that the character I played will be seen on Better Call Saul," Robert Forster revealed. However, he's not doing Heroes Reborn: "I didn't know they were doing a reboot of the show, so obviously, it hasn't come to me." [Vulture]
Warner Bros. has revealed a whole bunch of new stills from Annabelle, its spinoff of The Conjuring. Some of them are spooky, some of them are not, and none of them answer the question of why a person would want to have a doll as hideous as Annabelle in her house in the first place. See a few pics below and more here.
Don't hold your breath for The Boxtrolls 2. "We're not interested in making sequels," said Laika CEO Travis Knight. "So while we make Coraline, ParaNorman and Boxtrolls, the next film that we know is coming down the pike, which we haven't announced yet but we've already started production on, is something that's totally different from anything that we've ever done before." I Spit on Your Grave is finally getting a direct, official sequel. Director Meir Zarchi and star Camille Keaton are reportedly returning from the 1978 original for I Spit on Your Grave: Deja Vu, which to be clear has nothing to do with the 2010 remake. The synopsis reads as follows:
Following her rape, Jennifer Hills wrote a best-selling account of her ordeal and of the controversial trial in which she was accused of taking the law into her own hands and brutally killing her assailants. In the small town where the rape and revenge took place, the relatives of the four rapists she killed are furious that the court declared her not guilty and resolve to take justice into their own hands.
