Mark Ruffalo Says Marvel Is Considering A Solo Hulk Movie
Mark Ruffalo seems like one of the least-likely actors to lead a superhero movie his choices prior to The Avengers wouldn't much suggest he wanted to be a franchise guy. But he was, unsurprisingly, great at playing Bruce Banner in The Avengers, and that film's version of the Hulk got audiences more interested in the gamma-green hero than they had been in a long time. Naturally, fans wanted a solo Hulk film afterward, but Marvel has been slow to say "Ok, let's do it."
Ruffalo returns as the Hulk (and Banner, the Science Bro) in Avengers: Age of Ultron. But what about that solo film? There's no word from Marvel at this point, but Ruffalo says the studio seems to be in the process of figuring out an angle.
Ruffalo talked to Digital Spy, which asked him about the chance of a solo film:
I think they are, for the first time, entertaining the idea of it. When we did The Avengers it was basically 'No!', and now there is some consideration for it. But there's still nothing definitive, not even a skeletal version of what it would be. I look forward to going down that road, if we could crack that nut.
So, yeah, pretty obvious. Of course Marvel is considering it. The question is more about what story would be chosen, and how much Banner would even factor in to the film. Age of Ultron will probably provide some big new clues, but could also reinforce the idea that a solo film is difficult. That is: part of the reason the Hulk comes across so well in the first Avengers is that he is used sparingly. Joss Whedon deployed the Hulk in a very smart manner, highlighting the best and most interesting things about the character without giving him an opportunity to become too familiar.
