POTD: Captain America's To-Do List From 'Winter Soldier'
When you spend seventy years under ice, you tend to miss out on a lot of world events and cultural references. (Heck, I feel lost when I sign back on to Twitter after being away for a week.) So naturally, there's a lot Steve Rogers doesn't understand about our modern world. But he's not one to just throw up his hands and give up.
A screenshot from the opening scene of Captain America: The Winter Soldier reveals Cap's to-do list, with items as varied as "Berlin Wall (Up + Down)," "Thai Food," and of course, "Star Wars / Trek." Basically, it's the most adorable thing ever. Check it out after the jump.
Aw, Cap, it's okay. I'm not sure I've heard the entire Trouble Man soundtrack either.
It's a small detail, but it's exactly the kind of character work Marvel Studios does so well. Of course Steve carries around a notebook with all the movies, music, events, and foodstuffs people have recommended to him. That's just the kind of earnest, well-meaning guy he is.
It really seems like he's got his work cut out for him, though. Depending on how compulsive he is, the Star Trek franchise alone could take him weeks to get through. At least he's already taken care of fellow Disney property Star Wars.
Speaking with Germain at the Captain America: The Winter Soldier press junket, directors Joe and Anthony Russo revealed that the list took quite a bit of time to put together. They even turned to the pop culture experts at Community to try and get the items just right. "Everybody had their idea of what they wanted on the list," Joe said.
We even had friends of ours like, you know, guys from Community, writers from Community, we would call them and say hey, if Cap had a list, what do you think would be on it? And everybody was just throwing ideas at us. And then I remember the day that we just took all the ideas and went okay, let's write it out here and the most popular ones bubbled to the surface. And then we tried to put little jokes into each one, like Rocky 1 and 2, with a little question mark after 2.
Look for Germain's full interview with the Russos to go up in the next couple of weeks. Captain America: The Winter Soldier opens April 4.
Discuss: Go ahead, express your outrage at the inclusions and omissions on this list. Should he be trying to catch up on The Simpsons? Seinfeld? Is "disco" really a vital, can't-miss item? If he really wants to understand early 21st century pop culture, superhero movies would probably be a good place to start... but I guess it's pretty obvious why the MCU and Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy aren't on his list.
