Which 2014 Super Bowl Commercials Were Directed By Movie Directors?
The small screen regularly attracts many big screen filmmakers to film 30 and 60 second television commercials, but the Super Bowl is the premiere for many of these new spots. So beyond the commercials for big screen movies and television shows, which of the commercials shown during the big game were directed by movie directors? Find out after the jump.
The Maserati spot "Strike" felt heavily inspired by Beasts of a Southern Wild, so much so that it also shares the same Oscar nominated star. But the commercial for the new Maserati Ghibli was actually directed by Pineapple Express/Your Highness filmmaker David Gordon Green. This was my favorite commercial of the night by far.
Academy Award-winning director Tom Hooper (The King's Speech/Les Misérables) was responsible for the awesome Jaguar British Villains spot.
It may come as no surprise that Jeff Tremaine, the filmmaker behind the Jackass movies, was the filmmaker behind Budweiser "Up For Whatever – Epic Night" hidden camera spots. The spot features Minka Kelly, Don Cheadle and Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Jake Scott (the commercial and music video filmmaker behind the 2010 feature Welcome to the Rileys) directed not one but two commercials this year. First up is one of the most watched sports, Budweiser's "Puppy love".
Scott also directed Coke's "Going All The Way" spot which featured an overzealous peewee football player.
Snow White and the Huntsman director Rupert Sanders helmed the Axe bodyspray "Love is in the Air" comemrcial.
One Hour Photo/Never Let Me Go helmer Mark Romanek is a prolific music video director, so its no surprised that he reteamed with U2 for the Bank of America (red) Invisible spot. Romanek directed U@ on the "Vertigo by U2" Apple commercial in 2004.John Hillcoat, director of The Road and Lawless, helmed the America the Beautiful spot for Coke.
You'll never guess who directed the David Beckham H&M spot: Drive/Only God Forgives/Bronson filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn.
47 Ronin director Carl Erik Rinsch was behind Kia's "The Truth" spot which features Laurence Fishburne reprising his role as Morpheus from The Matrix.
Henry's Crime director Malcom Venville did the "A Better Web Awaits" commercial for Squarespace.
