Harvey Weinstein Wants 'Scream 5' To End Series; MTV Show Will Include Supernatural Elements

Scream 5 has not seemed terribly likely to happen. Neither Wes Craven nor Neve Campbell seem to have much faith in the idea of the film, and the mere fact that it's barely made any progress in the past two and a half years is a discouraging sign. But Harvey Weinstein, eternal optimist that he is, has not given up hope. He still wants to make Scream 5, so he can close out the series once and for all.

Regardless of whether the fifth film gets made, though, the franchise is set to live on on the small screen. It's just that the new show won't have much to do with the original movies. For one thing, it'll introduce a new supernatural element. Hit the jump for Weinstein's latest comments on Scream.

The fourth Scream seemed poised to hand off the story to a new group of kids, but ultimately wound up being all about the original cast of characters including Sidney (Campbell), Dewey (David Arquette), and Gale (Courteney Cox). Weinstein is probably right that at this point, there's not much to do but end the story by killing them off.

Such a move would provide a welcome sense of closure, since it doesn't sound like the TV show will. Weinstein reportedly told press in Zurich that the MTV series won't have much overlap with the movies, and that it would instead go in a new direction involving supernatural elements.

That sounds different, all right. While the movies have often been wildly implausible, they've never explicitly been paranormal. Then again, we probably shouldn't be surprised. Look what they did, for better or for worse, to the Teen Wolf movies.

At this point, there's a very good chance that the MTV series will premiere before Scream 5 will. The TV show has Craven set to direct from a script by Jay Beattie and Dan Dworkin. If it goes on to receive a series order, it could debut as early as next summer. Meanwhile, the possible movie sequel still has no script or director, as far as we know.
