Sam Neill Claims 'Jurassic Park 4' Is A Reboot
Colin Trevorrow's Jurassic Park 4, originally scheduled for release Summer 2014, is currently locked in a holding pattern. The studio and director agreed taking more time to craft the film was the best way to ensure it will be the sequel we all want. But what does that mean exactly? Quality is obviously the number one priority, but how will a film almost fifteen years in the making take up the mantle left by directors Steven Spielberg and Joe Johnston?
One of the franchise's stars, Sam Neill, might have a clue. The actor who portrayed Alan Grant in both the first and third installments said in a new interview he doesn't think he'll be asked to return because he hears the new film is a "reboot."
The quote in question comes from the Dominion Post of New Zealand, via Comic Book Movie. Here's the excerpt of the profile:
As well as confirming that he is unlikely to be a part of next year's Jurassic Park 4 ("I'm told it's a big reboot, a total re-jig"), Neill confesses he hasn't seen the new version of the original.
Before everyone gets all up in arms, this doesn't mean Colin Trevorrow is going to simply reshoot Michael Crichton's original novel with new actors playing Ian Malcolm and Alan Grant. That's a "remake." This film is still called "Jurassic Park 4," after all. Neill probably means it's taking the franchise in a different direction while still keeping the story, effects and integrity of the first three films. Different characters, different stories, same world. You don't think Universal Pictures would greenlight a guaranteed blockbuster like Jurassic Park 4 without thinking about at least 5 and 6 too, do you? Honestly, this news seems like a no-brainer.
How do you think would be the best way to reboot the franchise?
