Concept Art: Canceled Pixar Movie 'Newt' And Sam Raimi's Abandoned Lizard Designs From 'Spider-Man 2'
Mere days after brand new concept art emerged for several of Pixar's upcoming films, the same has happened for one of its abandonded projects. Newt, which was to be directed by Gary Rydstrom, was about how the last two newt salamanders on Earth hated each other and were forced to fall in love. The company canceled the project back in 2010 (maybe cause it had the same plot as 2011's Rio?) but there was still a ton of work done on it. We've posted some concept art from the project in the past, but a huge new batch of images have just come online by illustator Katy Wu. As you can tell above, they're exceedingly gorgeous.
And while we're on the topic of concept art, you'll also find two images below from Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 2 which show that Raimi was thinking of using the Lizard in the movie. Check it all out after the jump.
First up, here's a bunch of the Newt concept art posted by Katy Wu on her website. There's even more there and you can read about the project by checking out our old stories on it.
And then, the gang at Comic Book Movie was poking around concept artist Constantine Sekeris' site and found these two drawings, which he did for Sam Raimi when the director wasn't sure who the villain for Spider-Man 2 was going to be. What I find most interesting isn't that Raimi canned the Lizard or even considered him. It's how close these are to what we saw in The Amazing Spider-Man. Do you agree?
