New 'Oz: The Great And Powerful' Poster Features Awards Contender Rachel Weisz As A Wicked Witch
Most doubt about who the baddest of them all will be in Sam Raimi's Oz The Great and Powerful can now be put to bed. In the film, which opens March 8, simple trickster Oscar Diggs (James Franco) ends up in Oz and meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are struggling for control of the land. As Diggs figures out his role in Oz, he must also figure out whose intentions are true and whose are not.
Too bad his character didn't catch a glimpse of this new poster. It prominently features Weisz's character, Evanora, looking like an iconic Wicked Witch. The poster comes out at an interesting time for the Oscar-winning actress, who recently got a Golden Globe nomination for the film The Deep Blue Sea, which is now on Netflix Instant. Thanks to Cine1 (via Coming Soon) for this international character poster.
Three things to say about this poster. 1. Wow. It looks great and Weisz is super scary as the Wicked Witch. 2. Mila Kunis's character, Theodora, is widely believed to be the Wicked Witch of the West so, without being too spoilery, let's just say this poster might not be all it seems. L. Frank Baum fans should know what's up. 3. It feels like Weisz had a pretty quiet year, starring in The Bourne Legacy and also appearing in a small film called The Deep Blue Sea. (Of course, she also shot Oz.)
Yet Deep Blue Sea, which is a remake of a 1955 film about an adulterous woman, is now on Netflix Instant, earned Weisz a Golden Globe nomination, and threw her prominently into Oscar talk. A seemingly quiet year quickly turned interesting for the actress.
Then, of course, she'll be in this film on March 8. Here's the official description. What do you think of the poster?
Disney's fantastical adventure "Oz The Great and Powerful," directed by Sam Raimi, imagines the origins of L. Frank Baum's beloved character, the Wizard of Oz. When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he's hit the jackpot–fame and fortune are his for the taking–that is until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone's been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity–and even a bit of wizardry–Oscar transforms himself not only into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz but into a better man as well.
