Full Synopsis For Neill Blomkamp's 'District 9' Follow-Up, 'Elysium'
Over the past two years, District 9 director Neill Blomkamp has been very good about keeping plot details quiet for his second feature, Elysium. We know that Matt Damon plays a big role (and sports a shaved head at one point) and that Jodie Foster is the head of an offworld state. We also know the story is a sci-fi tale laced with socio-political concerns, and that it takes place a hundred or so years in the future.
We've heard plenty of rumors, but in the time since the film has moved into post-production even those have quieted down. Now we've got the first plot synopsis of the film. It actually has quite a lot of info, and the particular socio-political concerns will be evident really fast.
Collider got this info:
In the year 2159 two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Rhodes (Jodie Foster), a hard line government of?cial, will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn't stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. When unlucky Max (Matt Damon) is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.
That all comes from the invite for a preview screening taking place tonight. So, theoretically, we might have some very early word on the film to pass along soon. The actual ticket image is reproduced below.
Elysium also features Sharlto Copley, Wagner Moura, William Fichtner, Sonia Braga, and Diego Luna. It is due out on March 1, 2013.
