'Journey 2' Director Brad Peyton In Talks For 'San Andreas 3D'

No one knows for sure when the next big earthquake will hit the West Coast, but in the meantime the folks in Hollywood are staying busy making their own. Brad Peyton has just entered talks to helm New Line's San Andreas 3D, about a massive disaster that hits the titular California fault line. The new project marks a continution of Peyton's relationship with the studio, as he's just coming off of their Journey 2: The Mysterious Island. More details after the jump.

When we first heard about San Andreas 3D late last year, the plotline sounded to be in a very similar vein as Roland Emmerich's 2012: After a devastating earthquake hits Southern California, the hero travels from Los Angeles to San Francisco via some "unconventional transportation" in order to reunite with his ex-wife and children. THR's most recent story doesn't give way any plot details, however, so we don't know whether that synopsis has changed at all in the past several months.

Peyton has been making shorts for years, but only made his first foray into feature directing with 2010's Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore. While that picture proved to be a critical and commercial disappointment, he had much better luck with his follow-up project, this February's Journey 2. The 3D adventure pulled in a worldwide gross of $325 million, no doubt leaving New Line execs eager to team with Peyton again. The budget for San Andreas 3D is expected to be in the ballpark of $100 million — a step up for Peyton from both Journey 2 ($79 million) and Kitty Galore ($85 million).

A start date for San Andreas 3D has not been announced. Until that gets going, Peyton has plenty to keep him occupied. He's currently at work on rewriting the DC Comics adaptation Lobo, which he is also slated to direct.
