ALF Movie In The Works? Maybe
Along the lines of 21 Jump Street, The A-Team, The Smurfs, Dark Shadows, The Muppets, Alvin and the Chipmunks, the (now non-mutant) Ninja Turtles, etc., etc., etc., ALF could be the next retro property to find new life on the big screen. Or so hopes Paul Fusco, anyway.
The ALF creator and puppeteer recently revealed his intention to pitch a movie about the character to studios. And given how interested Hollywood is right now in making everything old new again, I wouldn't be surprised to see him succeed. More details after the jump.
Fusco told THR (via Movies.com) that he's been working on the project for a few years now, and that he thinks the time is ripe to revive the oddball character:
I think the timing is right. That's a big important thing, timing. There have been movies out there of characters that I didn't think were on the same parallel as ALF that got movies made, so I think it's time. I think it could be a home run on a lot of levels.
Not only would ALF benefit from the current popularity of '80s- and '90s-inspired movies, he'd be a good fit for modern sensibilities:
ALF could be more outspoken now than ever, because the world is a whole different place than the '80s. And I think the character still stands up and certainly has more to say now than ever. I think we would approach it in a fresh way. I don't think we would duplicate the TV show, but I think we would maybe put it in a storyline where we would explain how ALF got here and put him with a new family and let the character speak for himself.
While I can't say I was clamoring for an ALF movie, Fusco's thinking makes sense, and I'm sure there are plenty of fans who'd love to see the character make a return. Besides, if Battleship can get its own splashy summer feature, ALF definitely deserves his own shot at movie stardom.
