'Footloose' Trailer #2
Here we go again. We've seen a teaser trailer for Craig Brewer's remake of the '80s film Footloose, and now here's the full thing. Well, here's another trailer, anyway — this one is quite a bit shorter than the teaser. Hit the jump to see Kenny Wormold as Kevin Bacon, Julianne Hough as Lori Singer, and Dennis Quaid as John Lithgow.
Here's the thing: Footloose was always bullshit. A story about a small town in which a preacher holds sway and has dancing banned? It's absurd. But the actors were earthy and appealing, the music earnest and the dancing felt appropriately home-grown. So the movie worked because, as silly as the whole thing was, those elements played up a sort of self-effacing fun that made for an easy good time.
This version looks amped-up to match 'reality' as seen in the current crop of MTV shows. I guess that's what you have to do in order to distract the eyeballs of an audience that takes those shows at face value. But seeing the arena-ready dance moves and exploding fireballs here, my bullshit meter registers way up into the red. Looks like I'm sitting this one out.
Writer/Director Craig Brewer ("Hustle & Flow," "Black Snake Moan") delivers a new take of the beloved 1984 classic film, "Footloose." Ren MacCormack (played by newcomer Kenny Wormald) is transplanted from Boston to the small southern town of Bomont where he experiences a heavy dose of culture shock. A few years prior, the community was rocked by a tragic accident that killed five teenagers after a night out and Bomont's local councilmen and the beloved Reverend Shaw Moore (Dennis Quaid) responded by implementing ordinances that prohibit loud music and dancing. Not one to bow to the status quo, Ren challenges the ban, revitalizing the town and falling in love with the minister's troubled daughter Ariel (Julianne Hough) in the process.
Paramount opens Footloose, starring Kenny Wormald, Julianne Hough, Andie MacDowell and Dennis Quaid, on October 14, 2011.
