Todd Phillips Already Joking About 'The Hangover, Part III'
Today a press event took place for The Hangover Part II in LA, and one member of the press began the conversation about a third film in the comedy series by asking director Todd Phillips if anything is in the works. He said that no real conversations have been had at this point, but that he already has an idea, and that it would break the template we've seen established for the two existing films. Given that the second film looks to be little more than a retread of the first, that would be the first necessary factor in making a third.
Collider did a better job transcribing the full comment about a third film than anyone else. Todd Phillips said,
If we were to do a third one, and quite honestly we really haven't talked about it as we just finished the movie two weeks ago, this is the first time we've all been together in awhile. If we were to do a third one, if the audience...if the desire was there...I think we have a clear idea where that would head and it's certainly not in the same template you've seen these movies and obviously we always envisioned it as a trilogy as you can imagine (lot's of laughter), the third would very much a finale and an ending. The most I could say about it and I haven't discussed it with these actors is that it is not following that template but very much a new idea. As far as where it takes place...I'm very open like the Olympic committee to being pitched and presented cities...flown around with wine and women and bribed and then I will make my decision.
I'm still hoping, vaguely, that the trailer for the second film was essentially a big trolling gag on the nature of sequels, and that when we're able to see the finished film The Hangover Part II will look more like a 'fuck you' sequel along the lines of Gremlins 2 than anything else. Do I really think that is going to happen? No. I think we're going to get a movie that could be overlaid on the first just like the two trailers have been:
