Harvey Weinstein Thinks More 'Scream' Films Are Possible
In retrospect, over a decade removed from its previous installment and plagued with lukewarm reviews, maybe it's not that big a surprise Scream 4 was a box office bomb. The first three films each made around $100 million but Scream 4, released 11 years after the third film, has so far grossed under $40 million. Still, Harvey Weinstein, who has executive produced all the films in the franchise, seems confident that we'll get a Wes Craven-directed Scream 5 in the future. And after that Scream 4 ending, we really deserve it. Read his quotes after the jump.
Thanks to MTV Movies for speaking to Weinstein at Cannes. Here's the video, followed by the quote.
I wish it would have been better domestically but foreign [sales] are so strong that we'll do over $100 million worldwide. It's at $90 now, with about five or six major countries to go and a lot of small ones. We'll probably do $110 million. It's not the worst thing in the world that's ever happened.... I'm sure [Wes Craven is] going to do a sequel.
Before the film disappointed financially, much of the opening weekend chatter was about what exactly a sequel would entail. Well, to discuss that, we have to spoil the ending of the film and will do so below.
Major Scream 4 Spoilers Coming
With the death of both the film's killers Jill and Charlie (Emma Roberts and Rory Culkin), it seemed like the franchise had almost nowhere to go, especially since Scream 4 was envisioned as the first of a new trilogy. But it's important to remember that all of the killers die in all of the Scream movies, so let's get that out of the way. Scream 4 ended differently, though, in that Jill became a star and we didn't see how her death was handled. Plus both she and Charlie filmed all of the killings, a storyline that was totally dropped in the film and in my estimation the fifth film would, most likely, explore the results of that footage getting out and Jill's fame. Possibly it could spawn a slew of obsessed copycat killers or maybe just one really vicious one. The different ways a story could go based on the ideas of viral snuff videos and web celebrity is endless.

Do you think that's a viable starting point for Scream 5? Will it actually happen?
